Access into The King’s School is tightly monitored to ensure the safety of our students. Between 9:00am and 3:25pm all adults and non-staff personnel can only enter the school after having signed in with one of our receptionists. Once signed in, the Visitor needs to display a "Visitors Badge" as they walk through the school building otherwise they will be asked to leave. If there is any cause for concern an immediate lock down of the school can be brought into effect through our system of alarms and walkie-talkies. We continue to work at upgrading our safety systems and run regular practices to test the alertness of staff and students to potential threats to their safety.
“At The King’s School we aim to provide a safe and secure environment for our students. We have been working towards that goal by making our anti-bullying strategy a PET project for the school. PET stands for Pray, Educate and Train.
We believe in the power of prayer to change situations and so we pray for a safe school and for a good atmosphere of respect and cooperation amongst the students. Then we have begun to educate ourselves and the school community on the issue. This has included taking courses, making presentations to the parents and talking to the students on an ongoing basis in assemblies, home rooms and class times. We have helped the students to identify bullying behavior and then have given them a simple strategy to deal with it.
1.Ask the person who is doing the bullying behavior to stop
2.If that person does not stop, tell the nearest adult
3.When given the opportunity in the presence of the adult who is dealing with the situation, clearly explain to the person doing the bullying behavior what it felt like to be bullied
This strategy will only work if the child being bullied is confident that the perpetrator is going to be dealt with firmly and immediately by the adults concerned and we have worked hard over the last year to create such an environment. Not only does this method deal with the bullying behavior, but it also strengthens the child being bullied to stand up against it.
A big part of the strategy in defeating bullying behavior is to empower the silent majority to speak out. When bullying occurs a large percentage of members of the class know about it but are often too fearful to speak up. Again we encourage children to stand up and speak out, by providing an atmosphere where students know that bullying behavior will be firmly dealt with and by making sure that they are never too far away from an adult at any time of their school day. Parent volunteers are a great resource in dealing with safety issues as the greater the ratio of adults to kids, the smaller the opportunities for bullying behavior to occur.
Having educated the school community then we have trained the students in the strategies outlined above.
In our first year of the program we have seen significant success in reducing the incidents of bullying behavior, although we will continue to be vigilant on the issue.
